How do I choose the right Thalassotherapy cure for me?
When? Whenever you feel is the right time for you! Changes of season (spring, autumn), times of maximum fatigue, can often be a good time. But no two individuals are alike: you should listen to how you feel. Where? A key factor: the region dictates the climate. Traditionally, the Channel climate is described as bracing, rich in iodine, mineral salts and trace elements; Brittany and the Atlantic are considered energising, with pure air; the Mediterranean is soothing. Which cure? For maximum wellbeing, we have updated many of our cures: Aromatherapy, Nutrition, World Massages… You’re sure to find one to suit you. The first thing, of course, is to know what your aim is and what kind of cure you are thinking of. The best-known is still the restorative cure known at Thalazur as the “Feeling 100%” cure or the Thalazur cure (the latter including a daily massage). In addition to this great classic, however, other types of cure have been developed to meet more specific needs, such as the “Harmony Energy” cure, the “New Mother” cure, or the “Nutrition”, “Circulation” or “Special Back” cures. How long? The “spa break” formulas are an opportunity to try out thalassotherapy or simply enjoy a reinvigorating weekend or 3 day midweek break. Thalazur offers Feeling 100% or Thalazur weekend or spa break formulas and, for more specific requirements, has devised 3 night/3 day short stay treatments to suit every need: getting back in shape, tenderness, beauty, Zen relaxation, nutrition, or authentically for men! For optimum effectiveness, a cure should last 6 days to allow the body to readjust. Accommodation category? Quality of treatment? Thalassotherapy offers 2, 3 or 4 star hotels, and also the possibility of holiday flats that may or may not be directly linked to the thalassotherapy centre. The most relaxing option is definitely accommodation directly linked to the thalassotherapy centre, which means you can wander around peacefully in your robe!

Are some centres of better quality than others? A professional will have no hesitation in telling you: the 21 recognised thalassotherapy treatments are the same from one centre to another, and there is no variation in quality since all the centres are working to optimise their services. In addition, the price of the cure itself, exclusive of accommodation, is virtually identical everywhere, to the nearest 50 €. What makes the difference is, of course, how well the centre is maintained and the professionalism and experience of its teams, as well as the quality of the accommodation. The choice then depends on your budget. To give you an idea, the price for a week’s cure on half-board may vary in a range between 500 and 2,000 € or more, depending on the choice of accommodation and board.

THALASSOTHERAPY, BALNEOTHERAPY, SPA & THERMALISM: what are the differences?

THALASSOTHERAPY

Privileged marine location

Use of sea water pumped from several hundred metres offshore

For preventive or curative purposes.
Under medical supervision.

Uses the beneficial effects of the marine environment which include: the marine climate, sea water, marine muds, seaweed, sand and other substances extracted from the sea. Offers a variety of uses in the form of: pools, jacuzzis, aqua courses, saunas and steam baths, jets, seaweed applications, modelling and massages…

BALNEOTHERAPY

Uses “ordinary” water

No therapeutic intention.

Services designed to promote wellbeing. Stays at balneotherapy centres are modelled on those available at thalassotherapy centres but without the benefits provided by the marine environment (trace elements, mineral salts, etc.).

SPA

“Ordinary” water

No therapeutic intention.

A lifestyle option.
Often associated with leading cosmetic brands, set in a soothing atmosphere, generally luxurious but sober in decoration, the spa is all about beauty and appearance. Massage plays an important part in the spa experience, using techniques adopted from Asian and Oriental traditions.

THERMALISM

Uses mineral and thermal spring water, thermal gases and muds. Implies that the water used possesses curative virtues recognised by the medical profession.

Therapeutic in intention, often prescribed by a general practitioner or medical specialist.

Offers similar services to thalassotherapy, but using fresh water with benefits specific and unique to each spring.

Is a seaside holiday as good as a thalassotherapy cure?

No – There is nothing like the sea air, rich in iodine, coupled with sea bathing and sunshine, to boost our energy levels. Even so, the benefits cannot be compared with those of real thalassotherapy. It would take a whole day’s bathing in cold sea water to equal the health benefits of a 15-minute hydromassage bath at a pleasant temperature. In a bath of water at 37°, the skin absorbs trace elements through vasodilation ten times faster than on a beach. So don’t be surprised if there are no Olympic-sized pools at a thalassotherapy centre, just smaller treatment pools.

With all the products available today, is thalassotherapy at home possible?

No – Thalassotherapy centres draw seawater from several hundred metres offshore to ensure a supply of invigorating water. To prolong the benefits of thalassotherapy, 2 to 3 hot seaweed baths a week for the following 7 to 8 weeks are recommended. The marine climate also contributes to the restorative environment of a cure. The air of the open sea is free of bacteria, but the bacterial count 200 metres from the shore is 100 per cubic metre, 10,000 per cubic metre 3 km inland and 50,000 per cubic metre in the centre of Paris.

Isn't thalassotherapy really just for older people and women?

Certainly not! Revamped centres, new treatments and the longer weekends made possible by shorter working hours in France have brought about great changes. Customers are getting younger, more of them are men, and there are now specific treatments aimed at men. That said, the first signs of encroaching age are often spurs to start looking after your health more carefully. From 65 onwards, muscular strength diminishes at the rate of about 2% annually. Exercising in water, which literally makes you lighter since the body in water weighs only 10% of its normal weight, strengthens joints and promotes better calcium fixing in bones. The stress of our frenetic modern life takes a heavy toll on our nerves and bodies, making them more vulnerable.

What exactly is a spa?

In the wake of the great vogue for thalassotherapy, France is now in the grip of spa mania, fresh from the USA. Any luxury hotel worthy of the name now has to offer a spa if it is to keep abreast of fashion. And no upmarket cosmetic brand could hold up its head without an out-of-this world venue dedicated entirely to beauty and wellbeing.
The spa is characterised by a soothing atmosphere underpinned by luxurious but understated decoration. A spa necessarily involves treatments based on water (ordinary tap water) with, at the very least, a jacuzzi. Depending on the spa, other features may include a pool, hydrotherapy baths, jet showers, treatments under affusion showers, steam baths, etc.
The spa is named after the Belgian town of Spa, which in turn is reputed to have taken its name from the initials of the Latin tag “Sanitas per Aquas”, meaning health through water. The spa is a close cousin to thalassotherapy, the major difference being that a thalassotherapy cure includes a defined treatment protocol, designed to procure a specific effect: improved fitness, stopping smoking, weight loss, etc., all under medical supervision. The spa takes a much more aesthetic, hedonistic and non-medicalised approach to wellbeing. You can spend half a day at a city centre spa (day spa). As well as balneotherapy treatments, the bulk of customer demand is for massages. Often exotic in inspiration (Shiatsu, Thai or Ayurvedic massage), they fit perfectly into the philosophy of relaxation and wellness in body and mind so much sought after by the stressed urban creatures that we are, men and women alike. As uncomfortable as they may feel in a beauty institute, men seem to have adapted readily to the spa concept, to judge by the gender mix of spa users.

What should I pack?

We recommend two swimsuits in a synthetic fabric (bathing shorts for men are not allowed).

Sports kit (& shoes) for access to the fitness centre and any other activities that may be available in the surrounding area.

A bathing cap and a pair of plastic sandals/flip-flops, which are required wear inside the establishment (supplied free of charge for 6 day cures/on sale at reception).

A robe and towel will be supplied for all thalassotherapy services that include treatments.

Are thalassotherapy treatments safe for pregnant women?

Certain treatments are contra-indicated if you are pregnant; we recommend you ask the advice of the doctor monitoring your pregnancy.

Treatments authorised: underwater jets (no lumbar tension, drainage, venous return, massage), pressotherapy (venous return), hydrojet, thoracic massage, hydromassage bath…

Treatments contra-indicated: jet shower, sauna, jacuzzi, steam bath and all treatments involving essential oils or temperature differentials.

Are there any circumstances where thalassotherapy is contra-indicated?

There are a handful of rare therapeutic contra-indications, so don’t hesitate to seek your doctor’s advice, or consult the thalassotherapy centre’s doctor. Particularly since such contra-indications concern only a small number of treatments depending on your state of health.

You will be asked to provide a medical certificate or sign a waiver at the centre (only for stays of less than 3 days).

Benefits of the steam bath... all the information from Thalazur!

Using the steam bath
Relax, respect your body, pay attention to your sensations. When you are overtaken by tiredness, even after only a short time, listen to your body and leave the steam bath (or hammam, in French) without haste, then sit or lie down to appreciate the sensation of relaxation.

What is the temperature inside the steam bath?

The temperature is 45% but the steam is not evenly distributed around the bath. Be sure to keep the door closed; the steam generator produces steam constantly, but it is only released in short bursts.

Choose the right moment for your steam bath session…

The steam bath is a place of repose in which to prepare your body for treatments to follow, or prolong the benefits of a treatment.

Before a seaweed or marine mud treatment or a slimming wrap, to dilate your pores so that the remineralising effect of the treatment can begin right from the moment of application.
After modelling or massage, such as modelling under affusion shower, Thai, Ayurvedic or Balinese massages, somatorelaxology modelling or classic massages from the physiotherapist, to prolong the relaxation process already begun.

All Thalazur group sites feature a steam bath.

How long do I stay in the steam bath?

Sessions in the steam bath are very short if you are to have several in the course of the week, from 5 to 15 minutes a day, either before or after your thalassotherapy treatments.

Cold shower or hot? Rest afterwards?

Perspiration caused by the heat opens the pores and allows the epidermis to expel micro-organisms.
Immediately or shortly after the steam bath, a cleansing shower is therefore necessary.
Perspiration ceases once the body has returned to its normal temperature of 37°.
To maximise relaxation, lie down and rest for a period that matches the length of time you spent in the steam bath.

What are the benefits of the steam bath?

The steam bath benefits both mind and body, bringing a sense of lightness. Tissues are rejuvenated.
It gives us the energy we need to resume our activities or, towards the end of the day, prepares us for deep, refreshing sleep.
The steam helps to air and humidify mucous membranes: sinuses, trachea, mouth, bronchi, lungs, etc.

The steam bath is contra-indicated in certain cases…

Warning! The steam bath is absolutely contra-indicated if you suffer from cardiovascular, circulatory or other high-risk conditions. If in any doubt, consult your doctor.
